Artwork specifications
Bleed, safe margins, colour, resolution, file format
| Requirement | What we need | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bleed | 5–10 mm on every edge | |
| Safe margin | Text and logos 5 mm inside the trim | The artwork itself prints full bleed to the finished edge. It is only type and logos that need the clearance. Where you supply bleed, measure the 5 mm from the trim line, not from the edge of the bleed. |
| Colour mode | CMYK, not RGB | Bright RGB blues and greens sit outside the CMYK gamut and print duller than they look on screen. Send Pantone references for brand colours. |
| Resolution at final size | 30 dpi at the finished size is enough | Measured on the printed piece, not in the file. A file built at 1:10 and 300 dpi gives exactly that, and it is genuinely fine on something read from five metres. Vector and live type carry no resolution at all and scale without loss. |
| File format | PDF preferred — but send what you have | We accept virtually any artwork format and check every file in-house before production. If anything needs adjusting we will tell you immediately, before we print. |
| Fonts | Outlined | Outlined removes any font substitution risk on an overnight job. |
| Images | Embedded in the PDF | Linked images that did not travel with the file are a common cause of a job stalling. |
| Transparency | Supported — no need to flatten | Flattening by hand often causes the white boxes and colour shifts it was meant to avoid. |
Extend the artwork below the finished height. The cassette hides none of your design — the whole graphic stays visible. But the bottom of the print wraps around the roller inside the base, and if there is nothing there to wrap, the white fixing tape shows above the base once the banner is up.
Add 20–50 mm below the finished height. For a 2000 mm banner, supply the artwork at 2020–2050 mm. Keep that strip clear of anything you need to read — it is there to be rolled under, not looked at.
Before you upload
- Export a print-ready PDF, vector wherever possible
- Convert fonts to outlines
- Extend backgrounds into the bleed
- Keep important content inside the safe margin
- Check the resolution at the finished size, not in the file
- Check the page size matches the finished size, or state the scale you built at
Send the file even where there is doubt about it. We check bleed, resolution, embedded fonts and page size before anything goes on press, and where a fix is small it is usually just done. A two-minute reply at 9pm is faster than a re-export at 7am.
What turns a same-day job into a next-day one is almost never the printing. It is a question that has to go back to you and sit unanswered — artwork built at the wrong finished size, a logo supplied at screen resolution, or type running off the trim with no bleed behind it. Getting the six points above right removes nearly every one of those.
Why the grey-back material matters under exhibition lights
Also known as Pull Up Banners or Pop Up Stands, these are the ultimate portable display for exhibitions, trade shows and conferences, custom printed to your artwork. We are the emergency supplier for ExCeL London and Olympia, producing replacement banners for exhibitors who have been let down by other printers; for City conferences the drop is more often to a hotel or office near Liverpool Street than to a hall. We use a premium "Stay Flat" grey-back material that prevents the edges from curling under bright exhibition lights.
Each banner comes pre-fitted into a sturdy aluminium base with a swing-out foot for stability and includes a padded carry case. They are lightweight enough to carry on the Tube but large enough (850mm x 2000mm) to make a huge impact. We print and assemble these in-house 24/7.
