What we can print today, and what we cannot
Custom sticker and label printing is same-day work. Vinyl printing on this side of the business is a press and a cutter, both in this building — the print, the laminate and the cut all happen here, so artwork approved in the morning is normally ready the same afternoon, and files sent in the evening are printed overnight for a morning collection. Collection is available around the clock; courier across Central London is within 1 hour of dispatch — the heaviest sticker and label runs go to the studios, breweries and small-batch producers around Shoreditch, where a label change usually arrives with the batch already bottled.
Applied vinyl is not. Window film, wall graphics, cut lettering on glass and anything going on a vehicle is quoted on request and scheduled outside the same-day queue — not because the printing takes longer, but because fitting needs a slot, a clean surface and, on a shopfront, a time when the shop is shut. If you want the film supplied rather than fitted, say so: as a supplied decal it goes back into the same-day queue.
The laminate is the part that lasts
People choose vinyl by its rating and then leave the laminate off to save money, which gets the logic backwards. Cast film is rated 5 to 7 years outdoors, but that rating describes the film, not the ink on it. What fades on a south-facing window is the print. The laminate is the layer taking the UV and the abrasion, so on anything going outside it is not an upgrade — it is the part that makes the number mean anything.
Gloss lifts colour and looks more saturated, which suits photographic artwork and product labels. Matt diffuses light instead of reflecting it, so it stays readable under a shop light or a camera flash and does not hold fingerprints. Where the sticker carries text that gets read at an angle, matt wins — and that is most signage-shaped work.
Die-cut, kiss-cut, and which one you actually want
Die-cut goes through the vinyl and the backing, so every sticker is a loose piece in the shape of the design. It looks like an object rather than a printed sheet, which is why it suits a single strong shape — a logo, a badge, a seal.
Kiss-cut goes through the vinyl only and leaves the backing whole, so the stickers stay on a sheet. Easier to hand out, easier to post, and the surrounding backing protects fine points and thin lettering until the moment of use. If your design has hairline serifs or a narrow tail, kiss-cut is the one that arrives intact.
Either way, keep the cut line at least 3 mm outside anything that has to survive. A shape cut tight to the lettering leaves no room for the tolerance in the cutter, and the first thing to go is the bit you cared about. Very sharp internal corners are worth softening slightly too — they are where a sticker starts lifting in use.
Where adhesive fails
Vinyl sticks to clean, dry, smooth and non-porous: glass, painted metal, powder coating, sealed plastic, laminated board. It does not stick reliably to textured render, untreated timber, or anything dusty — and a surface that feels clean to a hand can still carry enough dust to halve the bond.
Cast film is the one that follows a curve. On a slight compound shape or a rounded edge it will conform without lifting; a flatter, cheaper film will let go at the corner first. If the sticker is going on anything that is not flat, say so when you send the artwork, because it changes the film rather than the price of the print.
Temperature matters more than people expect. Applying below roughly 10 °C in an unheated space gives the adhesive nothing to grab, and the edge lifts within days. On a winter fit, warm the surface first.
