Perfect binding is the paperback build: interior pages gathered into a block, the spine edge milled and notched, adhesive applied, and a heavy printed cover wrapped around and clamped on before the whole book is trimmed square on three sides. The result is the only binding with a flat, printable spine — which is the entire point for anything that will live on a shelf, because a shelf shows spines, not covers.
The boundaries are structural, not commercial. Below roughly 40 pages the spine is too thin to carry glue, and a saddle stitched booklet is the honest recommendation. Above 64 pages staples stop being an option at all — the inner pages creep outwards and the booklet will not close flat. Wire binding covers the lie-flat use cases in between; wire bound documents open 360 degrees but print nothing on the spine. PUR adhesive, and why the cure is not negotiable

40 interior pages is the practical floor - below that the spine is too thin to carry structural glue, and the honest recommendation is a saddle stitched booklet instead. The ceiling is around 400 pages. Between those limits any page count works; there is no divide-by-four rule as with stapled booklets.
Why can perfect binding not be done the same day?
Because the adhesive has to cure before the book is trimmed. PUR glue reaches its working strength by reacting with moisture over hours, not minutes - trim the book early and the spine you just paid for is compromised. Perfect bound work is quoted with its own lead time rather than a morning promise that production chemistry cannot keep.

Leaves times single-sheet thickness: half the page count, multiplied by the caliper of your chosen stock. 100 pages of 150 gsm silk is 50 leaves at about 0.132 mm, so a 6.6 mm spine. Can images run across two facing pages in a perfect bound book?
Yes, with respect for the gutter. The binding conceals roughly 5 to 7 mm of each page at the spine, so a spread built with no allowance loses its middle. Keep faces and critical detail out of the centre, or ask us to apply a gutter shift so the two halves read as one image once bound.
Can text be printed on the spine?
Yes, when the calculated spine is 4 mm or wider - roughly 60 pages and up depending on stock. Thinner than that and centred spine text has no room to sit straight, so we will say so at the quote rather than print a title that drifts off the edge.
