What perfect binding is, and when it beats staples and wire
Perfect binding is the paperback build: interior pages gathered into a block, the spine edge milled and notched, adhesive applied, and a heavy printed cover wrapped around and clamped on before the whole book is trimmed square on three sides. The result is the only binding with a flat, printable spine — which is the entire point for anything that will live on a shelf, because a shelf shows spines, not covers.
The boundaries are structural, not commercial. Below roughly 40 pages the spine is too thin to carry glue, and a saddle stitched booklet is the honest recommendation. Above 64 pages staples stop being an option at all — the inner pages creep outwards and the booklet will not close flat. Wire binding covers the lie-flat use cases in between; wire bound documents open 360 degrees but print nothing on the spine. Perfect binding takes 40 to 400 pages with no divide-by-four rule, and it is the specification for annual reports, prospectuses, lookbooks and brand books that need to feel like publications rather than printouts.

PUR adhesive, and why the cure is not negotiable
We bind with PUR — polyurethane reactive adhesive. Unlike ordinary EVA hotmelt, which simply sets as it cools and sits on the paper surface, PUR cures chemically with ambient moisture and bonds into the fibre. Trim early and the spine you specified is compromised before the first reader opens it. This is why perfect binding is the one binding in the building that is never sold as same-day — it is quoted with its own lead time, typically the next working day for short runs, and the date we give at the quote is one production chemistry can keep.
Covers run on 250–400 gsm boards and are laminated before creasing — soft-touch for prestige documents, matt for anti-glare handling, gloss for photographic work. Lamination is not decoration on a perfect bound cover: an unlaminated dark cover cracks white along the spine folds the first time it is opened. Four creases are applied — two framing the spine, two hinge creases 7 mm outside it — so the cover opens at the hinge instead of levering the glue joint.
