Neat stack of white minimal business cards on a pale grey surface
350 gsm uncoated high-white. Thick enough to hold a crease-free edge in a wallet.
Kraft-coloured loyalty card printed with a grid of stamp circles
Loyalty cards print on the same stock and in the same run as the business cards.
Red business card with a high-gloss laminated finish, printed Keogh and Associates
Gloss lamination for depth of colour. It shows fingerprints, which matt does not.
Business cards printed Morgan and Morgan resting in a wooden desk holder
Matt lamination takes a pen, so a mobile number can still be written on the back.
Green business card printed with a QR code, on a green cutting mat
QR codes need clear space around them and enough contrast, or a phone will not read them.
Teal branded stationery set with business cards, letterhead and a folder
Cards, letterheads and compliment slips printed together so the colour matches across the set.

Artwork specifications

Bleed, safe margins, colour, resolution, file format

Logos exported at screen size are the classic card pitfall — verify your file’s resolution in seconds.

Artwork requirements for business cards.
RequirementWhat we needWhy
Bleed3 mm on every edgeWith crop marks offset by 3 mm. Anything running off the page has to extend past the trim, or a white hairline appears along the cut edge.
Safe marginText 5 mm clear of the trimTrimming moves by a fraction of a millimetre across a run. Type sitting on the trim line will look uneven from copy to copy.
Colour modeCMYK, not RGBBright RGB blues and greens sit outside the CMYK gamut and print duller than they look on screen. Send Pantone references for brand colours.
Resolution at final size300 dpi at the finished sizeMeasured on the printed piece, not in the file. A 72 dpi web image scaled up stays 72 dpi.
File formatPDF preferred — but send what you haveWe accept virtually any artwork format and check every file in-house before production. If anything needs adjusting we will tell you immediately, before we print.
FontsOutlined, or fully embeddedOutlined is safer on urgent work: there is no substitution risk at 3am when nobody is at a desk to answer.
ImagesEmbedded in the PDFPDF/X-4 embeds everything by default. Linked images that did not travel with the file are a common cause of a job stalling.
TransparencySupported — no need to flattenPDF/X-4 carries live transparency. Flattening by hand often causes the white boxes and colour shifts it was meant to avoid.
Rounded corners or foilSupply the shape as a separate spot layerAnything cut or foiled needs its own path, not a drawn outline on the artwork layer.

Before you upload

  • Export as PDF/X-4
  • Convert fonts to outlines
  • Extend backgrounds into the bleed
  • Keep important content inside the safe margin
  • Supply images at 300 dpi at the finished size
  • Check the page size matches the finished trim size

Send the file even where there is doubt about it. We check bleed, resolution, embedded fonts and page size before anything goes on press, and where a fix is small it is usually just done. A two-minute reply at 9pm is faster than a re-export at 7am.

What turns a same-day job into a next-day one is almost never the printing. It is a question that has to go back to you and sit unanswered — artwork built at the wrong finished size, a logo supplied at screen resolution, or type running off the trim with no bleed behind it. Getting the six points above right removes nearly every one of those.

Card weight and finish decide how the card feels

Never miss a networking opportunity. Silver Image offers Urgent Business Card printing for professionals in The City and West End. We print on thick 350gsm or 400gsm artboard, far superior to the thin cards offered by budget online printers.

For a premium finish, we offer Matt, Gloss, or Soft-Touch (Velvet) lamination, which adds a protective layer and a tactile quality. We can also round the corners for a modern look. While specialist finishes like Spot UV take longer, our digital laminated cards can be produced in as little as 3-4 hours and couriered directly to your meeting.
