Wire binding in Central London, for documents printed here and for sheets you have printed elsewhere. Twin-loop wire to a maximum of 300 sheets, clear acetate or printed card covers, tab dividers bound in. Bound same day, with same-day and overnight courier delivery across London. Supplied sheets should arrive collated — that decides whether a job can be turned around tonight. Committee and consultation packs bound here are read around a table, not at a desk — Westminster committee rooms are where most wire-bound sets end up.

Three different jobs that all end in a wire spine

Wire binding at Silver Image London covers three distinct pieces of work, and knowing which one you are asking for changes what we need from you.

Which of the three you need tends to follow the trade. Chambers and firms around Holborn send print and bind, because the bundle has to be right before it is punched. Teams in the towers by Liverpool Street more often send sheets already printed in-house and want only the finishing. Agencies in Mayfair ask for the third: a wire bound brochure with a printed cover, going to a client rather than to a meeting room.

Insurance and broking offices at Bank and Monument send policy, renewal and slip documents to be bound in exact counts. Counsel sets from Fleet Street arrive overnight, wire bound so they open flat on a desk at a morning conference.

The three ways a wire bound document reaches you, and what each needs.
JobWhat we needNotes
Print and bindA print-ready PDF, single pages in reading order, 15 mm inside marginWe print, punch, bind and trim. One supplier, one deadline, and margin problems are caught before printing rather than after.
Bind supplied sheetsThe printed sheets, collated, in reading orderA finishing job rather than a print job. The margin is already fixed by whoever printed it, so check it before the sheets travel.

The inside margin, and why it is the thing that goes wrong

The rule for any wire bound document is to leave at least 15 mm of clear inside margin on the bound edge. That is the figure to design to. The reason behind it is that the punch bites roughly 12 mm into that edge, so a document built with a 10 mm margin comes back with the text punched through the holes, and 15 mm leaves a working margin beyond them.

The wire binding margin A page seen face-on: a column of punched holes with the wire running through them along the left edge, a shaded strip roughly 12 millimetres wide consumed by the punch, and text lines starting safely 15 millimetres in from the bound edge. WHAT THE PUNCH TAKES ~12 mm gone to the punch · text safe from 15 mm Wire through punched holes: opens 360°, lies flat
The punch removes roughly 12 mm of the bound edge — removed, not covered. Build the file with a 15 mm inside margin and nothing gets punched through.

This matters more on supplied sheets than on documents Silver Image London prints, because by the time the sheets arrive the margin is already fixed. On a print-and-bind job a narrow margin is caught at file check and can be fixed before anything goes on press. On sheets printed elsewhere the only remedies are to trim the document narrower, which throws off the finished size, or to reprint. Check the margin before the sheets travel, not after.

Page order is the other thing worth settling early. Supply single pages in reading order rather than reader's spreads: Silver Image London imposes the document, and a pre-imposed spread has to be taken apart before that can happen. Double sided halves the sheet count, which makes the document thinner, cheaper and further from the 300-sheet ceiling; single sided is worth it where pages get annotated on the reverse or pulled out individually.

Supplied sheets: collated is the whole difference

Where you are supplying the printed sheets, bring them collated — already in reading order, one complete set after another. This is not a formality. It is the difference between a job Silver Image London can turn around tonight and one it cannot.

Uncollated sheets can be collated here, but it is chargeable and it extends the turnaround, and on same-day work the time is the part that hurts. A thousand sheets already in page order is minutes of work before binding starts; the same thousand stacked page by page is an hour of sorting first. If you are having something printed elsewhere specifically to be bound here, ask that printer to deliver it collated and the whole job gets faster.

Covers, dividers and the 300-sheet ceiling

The standard build is a clear acetate front and a card back. The acetate is structural as much as decorative: it takes the handling that would otherwise scuff page one, and it lets the cover design show through without a separate printed cover. Because the front is transparent, whatever is on page one is the cover, so design page one as one. Printed card covers front and back are the alternative where the document is going to a client rather than sitting on a desk.

Tab dividers bind in with the pages and project past the trimmed edge, which is what makes them worth it on anything navigated rather than read straight through — tender responses, training manuals, board packs. Tabs are positioned during punching rather than added afterwards, so tell us where they fall when you send the file or the sheets.

The ceiling is 300 sheets, which is 600 pages printed double sided. Past that the document splits into volumes. Choose where that break falls yourself, at a section boundary, rather than letting it land wherever the sheet count runs out. Wire diameter also steps up with the sheet count rather than scaling smoothly, so if you are binding a series that has to match on a shelf, tell us the range of extents before the first one is bound.

RequirementWhat we needWhy
Inside marginAt least 15 mm clear on the bound edgeThe punch bites roughly 12 mm. This is the rule to design to and the most common reason a document is re-exported.
Page orderSingle pages in reading order, not spreadsWe impose the document. A pre-imposed spread has to be taken apart first.
CoverDesign page one as a cover if using acetateThe acetate is transparent, so page one is what people see.
Bleed3 mm on anything running to the edgeText documents usually need none. It matters on printed covers and full-bleed charts.
Colour modeCMYK, not RGBRGB blues and greens sit outside CMYK gamut and print duller than they look on screen.
Resolution300 dpi at the finished sizeMeasured on the printed page, not in the file.
File formatPDF preferred — but send what you haveWe accept virtually any format and check every file before production.

Before you upload or send sheets

  • Leave at least 15 mm of clear inside margin on the bound edge
  • Export as PDF, single pages in reading order
  • Say whether it runs single or double sided
  • Say where any tab dividers fall
  • Check the sheet count against the 300-sheet maximum
  • If you are sending printed sheets, send them collated

Send the file even where there is doubt about it. Silver Image London checks the inside margin, page order and sheet count before punching, and where a fix is small it is usually just done.

On supplied sheets the check happens on arrival rather than on screen, which is later than anyone wants. A photograph of the first page with a ruler against the bound edge, sent before the sheets travel, settles it in a minute.

Q&A

Can you bind documents I have printed myself?

Yes. Wire binding at Silver Image London is a finishing service as much as a print service, and a large share of the work is sheets printed elsewhere. Bring them collated, in reading order, one complete set after another. That single thing decides whether a job can be turned around the same day.

Do supplied sheets have to arrive collated?

Collated is strongly preferred and it is not a formality. Silver Image London can collate uncollated sheets, but it is chargeable and it extends the turnaround, and on a same-day job the time is the part that hurts. A thousand sheets already in page order is minutes of work before binding; the same thousand stacked page by page is an hour.

What is the maximum thickness for wire binding?

300 sheets, which is 600 pages printed double sided. Past that a document has to be split into volumes. It is worth choosing where the break falls yourself, at a section boundary, rather than leaving it to fall wherever the sheet count runs out.

How much inside margin do I need to leave?

Leave at least 15 mm of clear inside margin on the bound edge. That is the figure to design to. The punch bites roughly 12 mm into that edge, so a document built with a 10 mm margin comes back with the text punched through, and 15 mm leaves a working margin beyond the holes.

What cover options are there?

The standard build is a clear acetate front and a card back. The acetate takes the handling that would otherwise scuff page one and lets the cover design show through without a separate printed cover. Printed card covers front and back are also available where the document is going to a client rather than to a desk.

Can you bind in tab dividers?

Yes. Tab dividers bind in with the pages and project past the trimmed edge, which is what makes them useful on anything navigated rather than read straight through: tender responses, training manuals, board packs. Tell us where the tabs fall when you send the file or the sheets, because tabs are positioned during punching rather than added afterwards.

Should the document be single or double sided?

Double sided halves the sheet count, so the document is thinner, cheaper and further from the 300-sheet limit. Single sided is worth it where pages get annotated on the reverse or pulled out individually. Either binds the same way; the choice affects thickness rather than the binding itself.

How should I supply the file if you are printing it too?

A print-ready PDF as single pages in reading order, not spreads, with at least 15 mm inside margin on the bound edge. Silver Image London imposes the document, so a pre-imposed spread has to be taken apart first, which costs time on an urgent job.

Is wire binding the same as a wire bound brochure?

A wire bound brochure is one application of wire binding, not the whole service. The binding is identical; what differs is that a brochure normally carries a printed cover and is produced as a print job from artwork, whereas much wire binding work is finishing applied to reports, manuals and bundles that already exist.

How quickly can you bind a document?

Same day, and overnight for a morning delivery. There is no fixed cut-off because Silver Image London is staffed through the night and capacity decides rather than the clock. Files and payment by 21:00 is the realistic window for delivery before 9am, subject to capacity and the size of the run.

Key facts: ordering tonight

  • Open 24 hours, 7 days a week, including Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays.
  • Print production runs 24/7; the walk-in counter serves the day and evening, and the status bar at the top of the page shows live whether it is open right now.
  • Files and payment received by 21:00 → overnight production for delivery before 9am the next morning, subject to that night’s capacity; we confirm at quotation whether the run fits.
  • No fixed overnight cap: tell us the quantity and we say at quotation whether it can be done in time.
  • Overnight jobs are normally couriered to arrive before your office opens; collection is arranged around your arrival time — call before you set off after 8pm so the job is bagged and waiting at the counter.
  • No minimum for walk-in jobs during the day — one copy is a normal job. Out-of-hours collection or delivery carries a £95 minimum plus courier if required.
  • Same-day and overnight courier delivery across London, most often EC1–EC4, W1, WC1–WC2, E14 and SW1.
  • Exhibition delivery to ExCeL, Olympia, the Business Design Centre and other venues: send us the hall, your stand number, the named person on the stand and their mobile, and the build-day or opening time you need it by; we deliver to the stand.
  • Send what you have: we check the artwork before anything goes on press and tell you what to fix; a print-ready PDF (CMYK, 3 mm bleed) is the fastest route.
  • Quotes come with a secure payment link — Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and Klarna; production starts once payment is in.
  • Courier delivery within London is usually in the region of £35–45, depending on the postcode and which courier is free; the exact figure is on your quote and is added to the job price.
  • A proof is available on request; when we design the artwork you always get a final proof to approve. Print-ready files are printed on site and our operator checks the run against a printed proof sample before it leaves.
  • Before we accept an urgent job we look at what could go wrong with the file, the stock and the finishing, and plan so that a reprint would still fit inside your deadline.
  • Every order has a dedicated member of staff and an agreed completion deadline; we do not run an e-commerce queue, so the time we give you is for your job.
  • Bank transfer is accepted alongside the payment link: tell us when you have sent it — the job goes to production once accounts confirm it has arrived.
  • Outside London and towards the M25 courier costs more: we check with the couriers and confirm the price with you before booking.
  • The binding quote tool lists A4 and A3 sizes.
  • The printing quote tool offers 90gsm paper and 170gsm or 350gsm card stock for printing quoted separately from binding.
  • Our standard paper for documents and bundles is 90 gsm, chosen for a whiter sheet, better colour on photographs and charts, and crisper black on text.
