Artwork specifications

Bleed, safe margins, colour, resolution, file format

Check your poster file’s maximum clean size — resolution is measured at print size, not on screen.

Artwork requirements for posters.
RequirementWhat we needWhy
Bleed5–10 mm on every edge
Safe marginText and logos 5 mm inside the trimThe artwork itself prints full bleed to the finished edge. It is only type and logos that need the clearance. Where you supply bleed, measure the 5 mm from the trim line, not from the edge of the bleed.
Colour modeCMYK, not RGBBright RGB blues and greens sit outside the CMYK gamut and print duller than they look on screen. Send Pantone references for brand colours.
Resolution at final size150 dpi at the finished sizeThat is the recommendation. The floor we will still print is 72 dpi where the artwork is built at actual size, 1:1 — that is what we will accept, not what we advise. There is no upper limit. Resolution is measured on the printed poster, not inside the file: a file built at 1:10 and 300 dpi lands at 30 dpi once printed full size. Vector artwork and live type carry no resolution at all and scale to any size without loss.
File formatPDF preferred — but send what you haveWe accept virtually any artwork format and check every file in-house before production. If anything needs adjusting we will tell you immediately, before we print.
FontsOutlinedOutlined removes any font substitution risk on an overnight job.
ImagesEmbedded in the PDFLinked images that did not travel with the file are a common cause of a job stalling.
TransparencySupported — no need to flattenFlattening by hand often causes the white boxes and colour shifts it was meant to avoid.

Before you upload

  • Export a print-ready PDF, vector wherever possible
  • Convert fonts to outlines
  • Extend backgrounds into the bleed
  • Keep important content inside the safe margin
  • Check the resolution at the finished size, not in the file
  • Check the page size matches the finished size, or state the scale you built at

Send the file even where there is doubt about it. We check bleed, resolution, embedded fonts and page size before anything goes on press, and where a fix is small it is usually just done. A two-minute reply at 9pm is faster than a re-export at 7am.

What turns a same-day job into a next-day one is almost never the printing. It is a question that has to go back to you and sit unanswered — artwork built at the wrong finished size, a logo supplied at screen resolution, or type running off the trim with no bleed behind it. Getting the six points above right removes nearly every one of those.

Two production lines: latex for speed, 12-ink for colour

Silver Image London offers the highest quality large format printing in the capital. We operate a dual-production line to suit every need: industrial HP Latex Printers for instant-dry architectural plans and outdoor posters, and state-of-the-art Canon PRO 12-Colour Giclée Printers for fine art and photography.

Our 12-ink system captures the widest colour gamut possible, reproducing deep blacks and vibrant RGB tones that standard 4-colour printers simply cannot match. The same run feeds the poster trade further out — gig and listings posters for venues around Camden Town, campaign sets for the studios and production offices in White City, and window bills for Soho that go up the night before. This makes us the preferred partner for London’s art galleries, luxury brands, and photographers who demand museum-quality results. We stock 200 gsm photo satin, high gloss, and 300 gsm cotton rag (fine art paper). Whether you need a single Giclée print for a Mayfair gallery or 50 architectural line drawings for a City construction site, our London print facility operates 24/7. We dispatch via dedicated motorbike couriers to The West End and The City, typically within one hour of the job coming off the press.

Q&A

Yes. We use Canon PRO 12-colour printers to produce Giclée quality prints. This archival-grade printing is perfect for artists, exhibitions, and high-end portfolios.

Yes. Posters are printed here and couriered to Central London, the City and ExCeL the same day. There is no fixed cut-off — the presses are staffed around the clock, so what decides it is current capacity and the size of the run. Ask at any hour and we will tell you straight away. Where it has to be with you before 9am the next morning, we need the files and payment by 21:00, again subject to capacity.

PDF is best, with TIFF also accepted. Resolution is measured at the finished size, not inside the file. Scale it back to check: a file built at 1:10 and 300dpi lands at 30dpi once it is printed at full size. We ask for 150dpi at the finished size. The floor we will still print is 72dpi, and only where the artwork is built at actual size, 1:1 — that is what we accept, not what we advise. Vector artwork and live type carry no resolution at all and scale to any size without loss, so send the vector version wherever you have it.
